I love how the floral trend can easily be taken from Spring to Fall now, with a simple change of accessories. Even on a rainy afternoon awhile back in Victoria I reached for this floral dress from Topshop and paired it with some navy accessories to make it look more seasonally appropriate. Although we got a rained out on this shoot (excuse the very few pictures we managed to get) I still loved shooting this dress. When I was in Ireland last year over the holidays I saw this dress and absolutely fell in love. With it's backless style and ruffled hem, it is such a great dress for lots of occasions. Here I paired it with my favourite velvet booties from Office and my wool coat from Topshop. However, I plan on pairing it with a cream oversized knit cardigan, tights, and brown booties to work this winter. Once the weather warms up I could definitely see myself wearing it with flats for a girls brunch!
Have I told you lately about my obsession with polka dots? I think you've probably realized it by now after seeing my previous post with my white and black polka dot dress. Well I couldn't resist this Zara blouse when I saw it. Not only for it's on trend print but also because it's a great shirt to wear both to work and on the weekend. I've already paired it with a cardigan and trousers for work and I can't wait to wear it throughout the winter into spring. It's lightweight fabric makes it a transitional piece that I can definitely see myself pairing with shorts or skirts come spring and summer. For now I think it is perfect with a pair of distressed denim, like I wore here for the shoot, paired with a leather jacket and wool hat. A great and easy go to combo for when I can't figure out what to wear. Are you as obsessed with polka dots as I am?
Falling for Fall
As I was driving back from Victoria to Ucluelet yesterday I was in complete awe of the changing leaves. I have always loved fall, in the past for back to school but now because it signifies a change. I finally realize it is time to slow down and the cooler weather and darker mornings and nights make me do so. The leaves have been even more colourful this year, probably from such a hot and dry summer. So when I saw these leaf piles in the Uplands I couldn't help but want to match my paisley print dress with them. Last winter I bought this bell sleeved dress with velvet trimming and I've worn it so many times since. I've paired it with over the knee boots for a retro feel or like I did here with opaque tights, my trusty leather jacket and Chelsea boots. I love this time of year where you can still wear your favourite dresses even if it means you have to layer them with some tights and I've been reaching for long sleeve dresses more and more.
A friend of mine, Kyla MacKenzie, who I had the pleasure of interviewing earlier this year about her art has released a limited edition tote Female Unfiltered. The totes are 100% organic cotton with soft, yet thick handles, perfect for carrying just about anything around in them! The bags feature nudes from Kyla's "Female Unfiltered" series. I was lucky enough to snatch the last one up while I was at home visiting over Thanksgiving weekend and I can't stop using it. I take it to work everyday and fill it with everything from my lunch for the day to my laptop and even end up filling it with groceries sometimes too. I have a collection of totes at home, they always come in handy but I love this unique and beautiful piece that my friend designed. Check out her current exhibition: Figures at 225 Quebec Street, Victoria BC to see more of her amazing artwork. To see more about Kyla MacKenzie and her breath taking art, head over to her website: http://www.kylamackenzie.com/ or Instagram: @kyla.artworks. I love being able to support friends and am so lucky to have so many creative people around me!
This is the second installation of lusting after, a peek into what's on my wish list. I decided to leave my love of Topshop to source out other high street shops to see what's on offer. Zara's fall/winter collection is absolutely beautiful. Prepare yourself to fall in love with almost everything on their website, like I did. Zara has always been a favourite of mine, whenever I am in Europe I definitely stop in because of their on trend items. However, I rarely go into the Vancouver location while I'm visiting the mainland because I find the European versions of Zara have way more to choose from with better styles. Now that I live on the wild west coast of Vancouver Island and am far away from any Zara, I have to look online: https://www.zara.com/ca/
Here are my top five pieces from their new fall/winter collection. It was definitely hard to choose just five, since their knitwear section is swoon worthy. I have one sweater: Sweater with Side Slits I got there in the late summer that I wear at least once a week, either to work or casually. I am seriously considering ordering it in a second colour since it is only $19.90, a bargain I really can't pass up since I'm worried I'm going to wear through my favourite sweater. If you haven't checked their new collection out yet, you should. There is definitely something for everyone.
This Velvet Bodysuit is to die for. With it's batwing style sleeves, faux pearl buttons down the front and velvet fabric. It is the perfect top for that holiday party you don't have anything to wear to yet, and it's available in black, which I always lean towards or a beautiful gold. I love bodysuits because they give the illusion of a perfectly tucked in shirt but I find sometimes they can be too tight and uncomfortable, but not this one!
This whole outfit is the perfect boho chic but the vest definitely makes it. I love how unique this vest is and I could definitely see it paired with a pair of skinny jeans and a plain white tee for an edgy, cool girl look. However, it works perfectly over this dress. Another reason Zara always gets it right, with pieces like this, that are still affordable but bring an outfit up a notch to look more pulled together and expensive.
I guess you could say Vancouver Island is rubbing off on me since I fell in love with this plaid top. However, it isn't your average plaid top that everyone has here because of the embellishments. I love that the brooch-like embellishments take an average, casual plaid shirt and elevate it enough to want to wear it for a more dressed up occasion. I can definitely see it tucked into a skirt for a date night or with jeans for brunch with the girls.
As you saw in my post earlier this week, polka dots are very on trend this fall/winter and I just can't get enough of them. This top is the perfect polka dot style, the blue and white combination is very french girl style. It would be perfect to wear with a pair of black trousers for work or on the weekend with jeans and booties. I have had my eye on it for awhile and am in love!
Plaid and check patterns are everywhere this fall, especially in terms of oversized blazers, which Zara has an abundance of, that I love. However, I can't justify buying a blazer while living on the west coast, as it isn't the most dressy place. Instead of going for the check and plaid suiting trend that is everywhere at the moment, I love that Zara has included this in their tops and dresses. This plaid dress is such a fun piece for fall. It can easily be dressed up or down, depending on your style and would look perfect with a leather jacket or oversized cardigan over top.
The Velvet Trend has been around for a few seasons now and I was both surprised and excited to see it back this fall. I fell in love with this kimono in 2015 holiday season and couldn't resist buying it when it went on sale after Christmas. Each fall I get it back out from storage, excited to wear it in a new way for the cooler months. Here I paired it with a simple black tee from the GAP that I am wearing on repeat constantly, tucked into a new pair of dark, skinny jeans from Topshop and my new favourite Topshop Chelsea boots. This look would usually look quite casual, however, paired with a burgundy, velvet blazer like I did here, elevates the look to both trendy and chic. I can't wait to wear it over the holidays on top of a black silk dress for a really dressed up holiday look. I also can't get enough of the velvet trend, I have two velvet dresses I can't wait to wear for a night out or date night look, which I'll be posting soon. What do you think of the velvet trend?
Polka dots had a major moment this past summer and the trend doesn't seem to be slowing down for Fall either. Seen on the runways for Fall 2017, polka dots have been updated into a much more modern trend. A classic print that at times can look quite juvenile or overly feminine is best paired with some edgy accessories. Whether you opt for this print on a dress like I did, or a blouse, you will definitely be on trend this season. I recently purchased this dress from my favourite high street brand: Topshop. I absolutely love it and can't wait to wear it again. Here I paired it with my faux leather jacket and leather Chelsea booties, both from Topshop as well. To me this is a look I will return to, as it feels effortlessly chic. I'm planning on pairing it with my block heel Steve Madden mules over the holidays while visiting Thailand for a more summery feel. I can't get enough of this trend and will be on the hunt for a blouse, maybe in blue with white polka dots next.
This is the second September now that I am not going back to school. I spent most of my 20's studying, either for my undergrad or my grad programs. Even as an adult I loved the idea of buying a few new items for "Back to School." To this day I still get excited when the September issues come out and all the stores start putting in their fall clothes. Don't get me wrong, I would be happy for summer to never end. However, I do love getting dressed in boots, jeans and warm cozy sweaters drinking a warm drink (preferably curled up by a fire.)
Since moving to Ucluelet, the shopping scene is rather non-existent when it comes to clothes shopping. There are plenty of beautiful gift and art shops around that are so unique in their own right I sometimes just like walking through them. However, for my shopping needs I have turned to online shopping. This can be dangerous at times. The advice I can give you is order from a shop that you know well and how their clothes fit you as well as a store that has a good return policy or else you will be stuck with a lot of unwanted clothing. My go to online shopping is Topshop which is carried at the Bay. I know how their clothes fit me, they always have a good selection of on trend as well as basic and classic pieces, and their return policy is great.
I decided to start a new series of my own personal wish lists. This way I can keep my shopping in check by placing items on a wish list, waiting patiently to go on sale or for when I actually need them. Here are a few pieces that are currently on my lust list for Topshop at the Bay. I really like the idea of layering a midi slip dress with a turtleneck for fall. The off the shoulder top is both on trend while still being a classic with the red stripes. I can't get enough of polka dots at the moment and they are everywhere! I have been looking at this dress for some time now, just waiting for the moment to purchase it! Let me know what's in your wish list or shopping bags!
Casual Fridays ft. Zoe's Bakery
Sometimes it's nice to put a simple and casual outfit, especially on a day off. My friend, Elyse and I grabbed a quick and easy breakfast at Zoe's Bakery and Cafe in Ucluelet a few weeks back. We enjoyed our delicious treats and drinks outside the cafe on their beautiful, wooden picnic table. The perfect Friday morning in my opinion. The sun was shining, and I realized after maybe I had dressed too warmly for the day but this top from Habit is so light and soft to the touch that it was the perfect piece to wear without a jacket. I love the colour of this top, a colour I can definitely see myself buying again in the future. I've already paired with an embroidered skirt and under a burgundy dungaree dress, the perfect combination of autumn tones of my favourite pairing: pink and red. Here I paired it with my favourite pair of casual denim from Topshop and my grey wool hat from Plenty, the look worked perfectly together. The hat definitely took the outfit from overly casual to cool and relaxed.
Denim has been everywhere lately. It is the perfect fabric for spring or fall, with lightweight or heavy versions available. Denim isn't just jeans anymore, it is so much more. It comes in jeans, tops, overalls and dresses, like mine seen here. I recently purchased this dress, mid-summer, excited to wear it for those last few warm days before layering it with tights. While I was in Victoria a few weekends ago, we managed to fit in a lot of visits with friends that we hadn't seen for awhile. We had two brunches, a going away party and a birthday party all planned, as well as catching up with family. For our second brunch we headed to one of my favourite spots: Northern Quarter. I decided to wear my new denim dress with my new black Chelsea boots for the winter to come. They are the most comfortable boots and I love that they go well with just about everything. A simple denim shirt dress was elevated to be a little more edgy when paired with these booties, a black bag and round sunnies. An outfit I will definitely return to when I'm stuck for something to wear! Denim has been everywhere lately. Fall Boot Trends 2017
With Fall just around the corner, I'm already reaching for my boots as the days get cooler and the nights get longer. Living on the West Coast of Vancouver Island though I am limited to the boots I can wear. I have the typical Hunter gumboots for those really rainy days and a pair of Blundstones for muddy walks but I don't actually enjoy wearing either of them. I do however, love wearing my recently purchased pair of black leather Chelsea boots from Topshop and I am already planning all my outfits around them. They look great with a pair of frayed jeans or a dress with or without tights (weather dependant), they really are all around a universal pair of boots. Even though I do love them, I still have my favourite boot trends, that although they might not be practical for a place like Tofino, I will continue dreaming of them. Maybe one day when I'm back in the city I'll purchase a pair from the list below. I also have a pair of suede over the knee boots that still live in Victoria, as suede is not going to fair well on the rainy West Coast, however, I do plan on wearing them when I'm back or traveling to Vancouver. Same goes for my beloved navy blue velvet booties I purchased from Office in Ireland last Christmas. Those two pairs of boots are right behind my love of my black leather Chelsea boots and I can't wait to pull them out for the winter season when I'm back home. Stay tuned on how I will be styling them
A trend I never thought I would get on board with was the white boot trend. But after seeing it gain in popularity over summer, seen as a major staple for street style I can definitely get behind the trend. The style above is from Dolce Vita and I think the black block heel and zip on the side give it some edge, making it a little more wearable than some pairs. This is definitely a transitional shoe worn throughout the summer with dresses and shorts and perfect for the cooler days to come. This boot elevates any outfit to the next fashion level automatically.
Leopard print is definitely not something new in fashion but the mod, low heeled bootie is something we haven't seen a lot of. I love leopard print especially when it comes to accessories like scarves or shoes. I still regret to this day not buying a pair of leopard print booties in London a few years back, same goes for a pair of loafers in the same print. I think that although some people may be afraid of the wild print, it acts really well as a neutral and definitely gets you noticed when you pair them with your outfit. I could definitely see myself pairing these with a simple black dress or even a casual outfit of jeans and a tee.
Black ankle boots are always a staple in my closet. I wear them to work, casually during the day and even dress them up at night. If you don't already own a pair of simple black booties you better start looking now. This pair above are similar to a pair I just recently purchased from Topshop in the Chelsea style with the elasticated band around the ankle. Mine have a smaller heel which is better for me at work and are already in high rotation in my wardrobe. I love at this time of year that you can still get away with wearing a dress without tights, but paired with booties change the look completely from the sandals or flats you were wearing all summer.
Over-the-knee boots were in style last fall and winter and are back just as strong as ever this fall season. They are the chicest shoe of the season and can be worn in so many different ways. Perfect for those chilly days to come, these boots will definitely keep you in style while still keeping you warm. The style has changed to make these shoes perfect for day or night, depending on how you style them. These boots above have a very small heel, similar to a pair I bought last winter. However, if you prefer a heeled boot there are many options to choose from out there. Pair them with a oversized knit sweater and skinny jeans for the day or with a floral dress for night, showing a little bit of skin above the boot.
These Boots Were Definitely Made For Walking
I had been on the hunt for the perfect suede over-the-knee boots since Fall 2015 when I first noticed them on the fashion scene. I wanted them to be flat, so they could easily be dressed up or down and practical for travelling. A few weeks ago I stumbled upon this pair at The Bay and immediately fell in love, however, I resisted the urge to buy them right then and there. Thinking about them for a few weeks and how they would make any outfit in my wardrobe that much better, I went back to try them on, it was 'boot love'. This past weekend I paired them with billowy, bohemian minidress for a night out and then tried them with this outfit seen here. I already know I will be wearing these boots all winter: paired with anything from an a-line corduroy skirt to a sweater dress to a more casual winter look of a cozy sweater and denim.
A Belated Halloween
Although this costume took some convincing, I realized how perfect it was when we were easily recognizable as "Wayne and Garth" from Wayne's World. The story behind the convincing was one day where my hair was a mess and I was wearing my glasses, (seen here in the photo), Dave said with excitement: "You look like Garth! We have to go as Wayne and Garth for Halloween." Which I responded with: "Thanks a lot babe, you think I look like a dude." Needless to say his convincing worked and here we are at the Haunted Hollywood event at the Royal BC Museum this past weekend.
The best part about this costume was the simplicity of it. As mentioned before I already owned the glasses, as well as the jeans, converse, Rolling Stones t-shirt and the messy hair. The only thing I bought for the costume was the plaid shirt at The Patch for under twenty dollars and the drumsticks I borrowed from a friend's boyfriend. For Dave's costume we had the hat made and he had to buy the wig, but the rest he had in his closet.
Hope this inspires you to look at your own wardrobe for ideas for next Halloween!
