As summer is in full swing and we are moving in less than a month I am trying to absorb this beautiful place as much as I can. Dave and I have lived in Tofino & Ucluelet for about a year and a half now. There has definitely been some hardships but there has also been some amazing memories we've made here. The winter was really difficult, with the long dark days and the heavy rain. It was an isolating place to move to, especially since we knew no one when we arrived. However, I believe that we really made it our home, even if it was a temporary home.
When we first moved here we lived in the resort, Pacific Sands Hotel on Cox Bay. That was a dream but also never really felt like home because we couldn't unpack and decorate (plus we were living out of our suitcases for 6 weeks.) Our next temporary home was an air bnb in Ucluelet, a little cabin overlooking the water, which was so cute. Once again it didn't really feel like home but we started to get a feel for the town of Ucluelet. I quickly began to realize I much preferred Ucluelet over Tofino. I worked in Tofino so I found that spending 5 days a week there was enough for me. It felt a little bit like a holiday town, like Whistler or something similar. The summers were so busy in Tofino and it was always so hectic, whereas Ucluelet felt a little more calm. It was also busy in the summer, but nothing like Tofino. Ucluelet felt more like a community to me, where I knew friendly faces, had a workout studio I loved and would visit the same coffee shop every weekend.
When I first found out we were moving back to Victoria, I felt sad. I still do feel sad, but am also happy. It's a funny feeling to have. I'm going to miss my friends I've made during my time here. I'm going to miss my co-workers and work place. But most of all I'm going to miss the community I felt a part of in this remote part of Vancouver Island. I haven't really shared much about my time living here, other than my favourite spots to go for food, coffee or hikes, so I thought I would share my experience here with you. As hard as it first was, I am so happy that Dave and I took this adventure and I will forever look back on it as an important chapter in my life.
While my friend's were visiting at the end of June I was in a way forced to feel like I was on holiday too. We went for beach walks, went for dinners and just spent time relaxing on the beach, something I rarely let myself do. It was so wonderful! While our friends went surfing with Dave, Dani and I stayed back to do a little shoot and just talk. She built a wonderfully warm and cozy fire on the beach and it was perfect and I was so happy in that moment. I have to remember those moments when we move back to Victoria and life gets busy again. We chose a relaxed summer beach outfit for this shoot. I wore a black tank from River Island with a really bohemian feel to it with a pair of black jeans from Topshop. When the sun began to set I pulled on my Cowichan sweater my mum bought me when I turned 16. I don't have many pieces of clothing from that long ago, but this is one I really cherish. My friend Dani wore it almost every day she was on vacation, we dubbed it her vacation jacket. It really was a perfect evening!
