Compared to some of my friends I am very amateur when it comes to makeup. Only over the past few years have I invested in more quality makeup. I consciously look for cruelty free and more organic based products now that I am slowly learning more about the makeup industry. I really only have two looks when it comes to makeup, my day makeup which consists of the same products every day. A light face, eye and no lip colour. However, for any events or evenings out I do try to change things up once and awhile, usually going for a a liquid eyeliner and some sort of colour on my lip. People are very casual when it comes to makeup in Tofino and Ucluelet so when I go away or go home I enjoy putting more makeup on.
For my face I do not like to put any foundation or powder on. I only use concealer on my spots when I get them, however, I am looking for a good concealer for my under eye bags. Right now my go to routine for my face starts with my Origins Vitazing SPF 15 moisturizer. This has been my favourite moisturizer since I got introduced to it a few years ago and I have been using it ever since. It smooths out redness in your face and gives you a slight tanned appearance, which is important for me because I am very fair, no matter what time of year. Bonus it has SPF 15 in it so I feel protected when I'm out.
My next step is giving my cheeks some colour and definition. I bought this bronzer Hoola by Benefit almost three years ago for my sister's wedding. Everyone I talked to about it said it was the best so I tried it out and love it. I do not contour with it because I don't know how, nor do I want to. So I just put a swipe of it on my cheeks and move onto blush. My favourite blush is Orgasm by NARS. I have it both in the powder blush, which I have been using more these days but also in the cream form. It is such a beautiful colour and a cult favourite. Finally I top this off with a little bit of highlighter by BECCA. I had a large one of this that I bought at the same time as the bronzer but sadly it broke and after lots of spills it was time to give it up. I recently got this travel size one from my cousin and it also came with the liquid version and I love it. It gives you that extra glow that just finishes the whole look off. I just put it on the tops of my cheek bones but some people use it for contouring as well.
If I could wear (and afford) lash extensions everyday I would! I like to get them for my holidays and they are so good for travel purposes to make life and makeup easier while being away. However, in my day to day life I rely on a simple eye shadow and mascara. I don't like to wear a lot of eye makeup for day and I recently binned an eye shadow palette I had for way two long (almost three years.) When I got rid of that I decided to try out Glossier's Lidstar sort of liquid eye shadow and I am so glad I did. I have two now, Moon and Slip, which are light yet still noticeable when you put them on, and they last all day! I usually follow my eye shadow with a liner, I have one I like from Sephora, however, lately I have been leaning towards not using it. For special occasions I reach for my Stila liquid liner, which is great and so easy to apply. I follow this with mascara. Mascara is the hardest thing for me in my makeup bag and no matter how many I have tried, I'm still not happy with them. I find that they often leave black marks under my eye half way through the day so currently I'm on the hunt for a new one. Right now I am using Benefit's Roller Lash in a travel size that a friend gave to me, until I can find the glass slipper of mascaras.
I love a bold lip, however, that isn't usually the case for my day to day makeup routine. Living in Ucluelet and working in Tofino, lipstick isn't really a priority to me because people dress quite casually here. However, if we're going out to dinner and I'm wearing a simple outfit like a tee and jeans, I love to elevate the look with a bright lip. Daily I wear Burt's Bees Lip Balm and Glossier's Balm Dot Com, which is my favourite 'lipgloss' out there. It is similar in texture to Vaseline, however, it reminds me of my favourite Australian purchase: Papaw Cream. Not only is it great for chapped lips but also works as a salve on your cuticles or any cuts you may have.
If I decide on a lipstick for an evening look my three favourite brands are: Glossier, NARS and MAC. I try not to have too many lipsticks as it can get quite overwhelming and overall too messy in my makeup bag. I usually reach for a classic red, like Russian Red by MAC, however, in the summer I love to pull out my MAC lipstick in Girl About Town, a bright pink to change it up. In the winter I love my Glossier Generation G Sheer Matte Lipstick because it is a darker raspberry colour and topped off with the gloss is the perfect look.
