The Canso Plane Crash Hike is probably Tofino's most famous hike. I have been wanting to do it for awhile now and a few weeks ago we managed to make it out. The hike winds through the forest leading to a crash site of a Royal Canadian Air Force Canso 11007 that crashed shortly after takeoff in early 1945. The plane is located on the site of the hill where it crashed over 70 years ago. It is still fairly intact despite some damage it sustained from the crash. The trail to the site is located just south of Radar Hill. Since we went in late July the trail wasn't too muddy, however, there are some points you have to pass through that are quite tricky to get around the mud. So be prepared if you want to try the hike and wear appropriate footwear! The trail is pretty well marked by flagging and ropes but it is also quite easy to get lost so make sure you pay attention the whole walk. It took us roughly 45 minutes there and back with some time spent at the crash site taking photos. I highly recommend taking the time to do this hike, as it is quite something being able to see a crash site up close from so many years ago.
