For the weekend of Aug 18th Ucluelet was taken over by music lovers from all around. Otalith Music Festival is the west coast's most intimate festival experience. The festival features an eclectic mix of people and music, from international, to national and even local bands performing over the three day festival. The aim of the festival is to promote tourism and community development through the arts and entertainment. If you have never been to the west coast of Vancouver Island, what better excuse to visit then to come to a unique and wondrous event that happens each year in the town I now call home.
The music began Thursday evening in Tofino at the Tofino Brewing Co from 6-930pm. However, our tickets were just the two day pass so we waited for the celebrations starting Friday evening. My two best friends, Abbey and Kristi, made the drive up from Victoria with Abbey's girlfriend Allie and joined Dave and I for the weekend. Friday night after getting ready for the festival in our best festival gear we headed to the venue (just a 10 minute walk away from our place or directly across the street from the campsites for the weekend.) The highlights of the evening were Kevin Morby and Twin Peaks and we listened on as the sun set and the stars began to shine. If you do decide to go to the festival next year, be warned that it cools off significantly in the evenings.
The next day Kristi and I had a lazy and quiet morning (trying to get over the little sleep and headaches we had.) We walked to the beach near our house and relaxed before getting ready to head back for the afternoon shows. The sun was shining and it was the perfect afternoon to relax on the grass and watch the shows. Carmanah, a band from Victoria, put on the best show that day (in my opinion). The lead singer, who also played the violin perfectly, had the crowds up and dancing at 5.45 in the afternoon. The great thing about this festival was the in and out access. So after the afternoon shows we were able to head home and make our own dinner and layer up for the evenings shows. When we headed back we heard Curtis Harding and Talib Kweli. Both of them put on an epic show to end a weekend of great music with great friends.
One of my favourite parts of the weekend was the festival fashion on display. Below you'll see my three favourite outfits of the weekend that I couldn't help but document. Thank you to the kind ladies for letting me take their photos, you all rocked on the fashion scene. Now as the summer is coming to an end, I'll have to wait for next year's festival fun.
